Mental rehearsal of competition day
Unlike general visualization, mental rehearsal plays through the whole competition day step by step — from walking into the venue to the final attempt — so that the real day feels familiar.
When to use it
1-3 days before an important tournament, and on the morning of the competition.
How to do it, step by step
Write out the day as a script: arrival, warm-up, waiting, going out, the first attempt, reacting to a disruption. Then run it through in your mind, including a plan for when something goes wrong (what I do if I make a mistake).
Common mistakes
Rehearsing only the perfect scenario with no plan for disruptions; skipping the "boring" stages such as waiting, which is exactly where anxiety builds.
How to make it stick
After the competition, compare what matched your rehearsal. A journal helps you make each scenario more accurate than the last.
When to bring in a psychologist
If the uncertainty of competition day brings on strong anxiety, a psychologist will help you put together a scenario that holds.

When you need a personal review
If the challenge recurs, affects results, or causes strong tension for the athlete, it is better to discuss it with a specialist. Sports Talk helps you find a psychologist and a format that fits the sport, age and upcoming calendar.
