Quote
“I hated every minute of training, but I said to myself: «Don’t leave, suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion»”
— Muhammad AliМохаммед Али

A psychologist's note: why this works

Ali admits something honest: motivation is not always pleasant, and waiting to be "in the mood" to train is a dead end. What works is not inspiration but the link between discomfort now and value later.

This is delayed reward: the athlete makes the future goal vivid and concrete in advance, so that it outweighs the immediate "I don't want to". Discipline is a skill, not a character trait, and it trains like a muscle.
