A winner's routine in 4 steps.

Consistency of results comes not from magic but from a system.

A pre-start routine is your personal algorithm for switching on a state of complete readiness. Ready to build yours?

Step 1: Deep analysis — become a detective of your own wins

Take your training journal and answer in writing:

  • What I DID: what warm-up did I do before my best performances? How did I spend the last 2 hours? What did I eat?
  • What I THOUGHT: which thoughts charged me up? ("I'll take them all apart", "I'm doing this for…", "I'm perfectly prepared")
  • What I FELT: what emotions and SENSATIONS were there in my body? (lightness in the legs, nerves as energy, calm)
  • The key question: what do my successful competitions have in common?

"Analyse 3 of your best performances. The patterns will show you your ideal formula."

Step 2: Creative experiment — the laboratory of your options

A week of tests in training. Try these on yourself:

Breathing techniques:

  • "Box breathing": in (4 sec) → pause (4 sec) → out (4 sec) → pause (4 sec)
  • "The winner's breath": 3 short sharp breaths in through the nose + 1 long powerful exhale through the mouth
  • "The relaxing exhale": in for a count of 4, a SLOW exhale for a count of 8

Body practices:

  • Self-massage of the earlobes for quick calming
  • Tapping on the sternum (the tapping technique) to stop the shakes
  • The superman pose (hands on hips, chest forward) for 2 minutes for confidence

Sensory triggers:

  • 3 different music tracks: mobilizing, focusing, calming
  • Using a particular smell (orange or mint essential oil)
  • A tactile anchor (squeezing a hand gripper, for instance)

Experiment! Your task is to assemble a toolkit of 8-10 techniques that work.

Step 3: Locking it down — put your puzzle together

From the methods you tested, choose ONLY the ones that give a fast and consistent effect.

The formula of an ideal routine:

  1. An action for CALMING (60 sec) — breathing with a long exhale
  2. An action for FOCUS (60 sec) — visualizing the first perfect element
  3. An action for ACTIVATION (60 sec) — "the winner's breath" + tapping
  4. A key PHRASE — a personal mental anchor ("My energy", "I'm here to…")
  5. Your signature GESTURE — a tactile finish (a clap, a fist into the palm)

Write the sequence into your phone and put it up in the changing room. Your routine should fit into 3-7 minutes.

Step 4: Automatic rehearsal — from conscious to unconscious

  • Rehearse the routine twice a week after your main session
  • Run 3-4 trial runs in conditions close to competition
  • Simplify! If some action doesn't work under stress, replace it straight away

P.S. Remember: a routine is the bridge between training and competition.Build it strong enough and it will hold under any pressure.
