Systematic desensitization

Systematic desensitization is a method for reducing fear by facing the frightening situation step by step while staying relaxed.

Definition

You build a ladder of situations from less to more frightening, and the athlete works up it one step at a time while staying in a relaxed state.

How it shows up in sport

It is often used for fear of returning after an injury, or fear of one particular element — working through it step by step brings confidence back.
