Pre-start apathy

Pre-start apathy is a state of lowered arousal before a competition: flatness, indifference, a failure to mobilize.

Definition

Arousal that is too low: drowsiness, heaviness, no drive, no desire to go out and compete.

How it shows up in sport

The athlete goes out without switching on, takes a long time to get into the game and loses the opening exchanges. Often a consequence of overtraining or burnout.
