Perfectionism in sport

Perfectionism is the pursuit of flawlessness, with excessively high standards and harsh self-judgement when they are not met.

Definition

A distinction is drawn between adaptive perfectionism (high standards plus acceptance of mistakes) and maladaptive perfectionism (fear of mistakes, self-criticism, dependence on others' judgement).

How it shows up in sport

Maladaptive perfectionism increases anxiety, fear of mistakes and the risk of burnout, and gets in the way of taking risks and learning.
