Flow state

Flow is a state of complete absorption in an activity, in which the action comes easily and seems to happen by itself.

Definition

The signs are: action and awareness merging, a sense of control, an altered sense of time, and no self-criticism. It appears when the difficulty of the task and your skill are in balance.

How it shows up in sport

The athlete is "in the zone": movements are precise and automatic, stray thoughts disappear, and the performance takes no effort of will.

Related tests

A disposition toward flow is measured with flow questionnaires; your general state with the tests section.

Exercises

The conditions for flow are created by concentration and a pre-start routine.
