Reframing (reappraisal)

Reframing is deliberately changing how an athlete interprets a situation, in order to change the emotion and the response that follow.

Definition

A cognitive technique: the same situation is reinterpreted within a more useful frame (for example, nerves as a sign of readiness rather than of threat).

How it shows up in sport

Reappraising a threat as a challenge lowers anxiety and improves performance under pressure.
