Anxiety in sport

Anxiety in sport is the tendency to respond to competitive situations with tension, worry and physical symptoms.

Definition

A distinction is drawn between anxiety as a trait (a stable characteristic) and as a state (a here-and-now response), and between its cognitive and somatic components.

How it shows up in sport

Intrusive thoughts about failing, shaking, a racing heart, tightness. It reduces concentration and precision.
