Goal setting in sport

Goal setting is the practice of framing goals that direct an athlete's effort and sustain their motivation.

Definition

A distinction is drawn between outcome goals (placing), performance goals (a personal standard) and process goals (specific actions). Controllable process goals are more durable and cause less anxiety.

How it shows up in sport

Relying on outcome goals alone raises the pressure; an emphasis on process goals helps you hold focus at the decisive moments.
