Sport motivation

Sport motivation is the whole set of internal and external reasons that drive an athlete to train and compete.

Definition

A distinction is drawn between intrinsic motivation (interest, mastery, enjoyment) and extrinsic (rewards, status, expectations). The kind where intrinsic dominates is the more durable.

How it shows up in sport

High motivation means consistent training and recovery after setbacks; a dip means missed sessions, apathy and thoughts of quitting.

Related tests

Exercises

Motivation is sustained by goal setting and reflection in a journal.
