A psychologist's note: why this works

The point is not that there are no limits, but that the brain puts a ceiling in place well before the body's real one. Fear announces in advance that you can't go further — while there is still capacity left.

The way to work with this is to widen the zone gradually through small successful repetitions: every time an athlete does slightly more than they believed possible, the imaginary boundary moves back, and confidence grows out of evidence rather than pep talks.
